The recovery of the rocket found in January 1985 was eventually covered by a large amount of international media

Synopsis

It tells the inspiring story of a battered single mother working for a small-town newspaper who becomes involved in an investigation into a rocket crash that turns life upside down in a small northern village. It is based on a real-life incident in December 1984, when a Soviet surface-to-air missile strayed from the Barents Sea across the Finnish border and crashed in Inarijärvi. Who would have thought that a single mother of two in a private home, married to an abusive husband in prison, could change her life by writing about the dangers of nuclear proliferation?

However, Niina was undeterred and embarked on a story that is attracting international attention regardless of the challenges she faces

But if you’re Niina Kuittinen (Oona Airola), a young housewife living in rural Lapland, that’s exactly what happens when she accepts a job as a reporter for the local newspaper and unwittingly stumbles upon a story that almost any intrepid journalist would kill for: the crash of a Soviet missile off course in the Finnish wilderness in 1984. He enthusiastically investigates the incident, despite his limited experience as a reporter, little knowledge of nuclear weapons and the resistance of his editor (Hannu-Pekka Björkman), who, not wanting to upset the locals with such depressing talk, instead insists on publishing just happy but harmless human interest stories. In the process, she grows and matures, finding balance as a newly emancipated woman and finding new love in a handsome, adoring and attentive soldier (Pyry Kähkönen).

Screenwriter and director Mia Tervo’s third feature based on fact is another one of those unexpected cinematic gems that effectively mixes genres to create a wonderful and enlightening film

Nina’s transformation gives her meaning and helps her prepare for the imminent release of her incarcerated drug-addled husband (Tommi Eronen), who returns home and promises he’s changed, despite evidence to the contrary. Nina’s new life thus begins, ironically, with her immersion in a devastating subject that ultimately gives her a healthier and more realistic view of the larger world and the nature of her existence. Much of the first half is a colorful portrait of the protagonist’s hometown, family and neighbors, with plenty of humor that is decidedly eccentric, endearingly tone-deaf and wonderfully low-key, not unlike the folksy, self-righteous laughs prevalent in films like “Fargo” (1996).

Admittedly, the film starts to drag a bit in the last act, needlessly stretching material that is easily predictable without having to stretch it

. But as Niina’s story unfolds, it takes on a more serious tone as viewers witness the character develop into someone who leaves behind the paralyzing naivety and obedience that has long held her back. Still, “The Missile” is one of those movies where viewers are likely to walk away feeling warmly welcomed into a community of loving family and friends they’ve known for a long time, but without the overly burdensome trappings.

saccharine and sentimentality

And there’s a lot to be said for that, even if you have to get a little taste of Armageddon.
