How Probiotics Affect Disease

Probiotics are one of the most popular supplements used to help combat the symptoms that cause digestive distress. 20 million Americans suffer from chronic digestive diseases, and there has been research done that shows probiotics can help to heal some of these problems. So how do they work?

Probiotics work to colonize the digestive tract. This modulates an immune system response that can produce anti-inflammatory compounds. This influences the body’s organs directly and inhibits the growth of harmful bacteria that causes certain disorders and symptoms that cause digestive problems. Probiotics also stimulate the growth of beneficial bacteria and interact with other microorganisms that keep you feeling your best.

Research has proven that probiotics can help heal rotavirus and necrotizing enterocolitis in infants, digestive problems caused by antibiotics, and symptoms of digestive discomfort like bloating and cramping. There have been claims made that probiotics may reduce symptoms and side effects of certain cancers, neurodevelopmental disorders, and depression and stress. While these claims have yet to be proven, the benefits of probiotics make it clear that they can have a positive effect on people who are suffering from certain conditions.

If you think you could benefit from a probiotic, reach out to your doctor to make sure you are doing so in a safe and healthy way. You can also learn more about probiotics in the infographic below:
